14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft launched Windows 10 without a significant redesign of File Explorer, the rebranded version of Windows Explorer that allows users to manage their files, but it turns out that the company is already working on a major overhaul.
While no specifics on when exactly this overhaul could arrive have been offered, it’s expected that the Redstone update coming this summer would be the moment to introduce it, especially because there are many other improvements that are expected to be part of this release.
As MSPU reported, Peter Skillman, GM of Core UX for Windows, confirmed in a recent tweet that “we are working on a total update of File Explorer [but] can articulate schedule yet.” Redstone, however, seems to be the most likely update to bring it, with some previews to be released to insiders by the time the update lands for everyone.
Tabs and touch support in File Explorer
Although no details have been provided, it’s expected that the upcoming File Explorer update could bring tabs and touch support, as these are two of the most requested features in the Windows 10 Feedback app at the moment.
Tab support would allow users to work with multiple folders at the same time but having just one instance of File Explorer running, a feature that’s already available in third-party file managers, and also possible to integrate into the default Windows 10 app with Clover.
Adding touch support would also make sense given Microsoft’s push for Windows 10 to be used on tablets and 2-in-1s with touchscreens.
And last but not least, a dark theme, more customization options, and a refreshed look are all very popular requests in the Windows community, so the chances are that Microsoft’s looking at all feedback in order to decide how to improve File Explorer.
Windows 10 Redstone is projected to launch in June, so we shouldn’t be too far away from the moment when a new File Explorer might actually be released for retail users.
