Redmond getting ready for huge browser update in Windows 10

Microsoft has recently published online what seems to be the central hub for extensions that can run on Edge, the new Windows 10 browser which replaces Internet Explorer as the default option in the new OS.

We’ve known for a while that Microsoft is working on extensions and the company itself confirmed this project, but according to people close to the matter, the official launch has been delayed because work isn’t advancing at the pace that the company aimed for in the first place.

But according to this new “accidental” website unveiling, the debut of Microsoft Edge browser extensions is very close and the Redmond-based software giant could now be giving the final touches to a first version allowing us to try them out.

Extensions not yet working

The website that was published earlier today and spotted by Twitter user @h0x0d points to just two different browser extensions, namely Pinterest and Reddit Enhancement Suite, both of which could be installed by simply clicking the download button on the said page. And yet, none of the two can be used just yet, as the existing builds of Windows 10 and Edge browser do not support extensions.

Microsoft has already removed the website after it discovered the “mistake,” but the two extensions are already up for grabs from Mega, so you can still further inspect them if you wish. Keep in mind that you can’t run them on the current versions of Windows 10.

Rumor has it that extension support will arrive with the Redstone update planned for 2016, so the first preview builds that could be part of this branch are expected to bring this feature too. And given the fact that Microsoft is already testing the page for extensions, we might be closer to the public release of this first build than we expected.

As usual, Microsoft doesn’t comment on speculation, rumors, or anything unreleased yet, so keep your fingers crossed to get the first Redstone build as soon as possible.
