Today we will introduce you, guys, to a new open-source and open-world hardware device, a TV box called GeekBox, which is capable of booting the Ubuntu Linux and Android operating systems.

According to the project's website, GeekBox is not a simple piece of hardware. It is a versatile open-source TV box that you can DIY (Do It Yourself), a dream come true for geeks around the world who want to build their most compact, extensible and powerful half TV box, half Raspberry Pi 2 on steroids.

"Unlike Traditional TV box which turns the television into an intelligent platform like smart phones or tablet PCs, GeekBox will break this balance by not only fulfilling the aforementioned fundamental missions, but also opening an open-source project," reads the official website.

Technical specifications

GeekBox is powered by a Rockchip RK3368 ARM 64-bit Octa-Core Cortex-A53 CPU running at 1.5GHz, a PowerVR SGX6110 GPU that supports DirectX 9.3, OpenGL 3.1, OpenCL, and OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0/3.0, 2GB LPDDR3 RAM running at 1600Mbps, and 16GB Samsung eMMC v5.0 internal storage.

It also features IEEE802.11a/b/g/n/ac 2x2 MIMO running at 867Mbps AP6354 Wi-Fi module, 100/1000M LAN Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.1, standard HDMI 2.0, two USB ports, one USB OTG, one TF Card slot, two antennas, IR controller, HW security system, 3-Pins UART port for developers, and 2-Pins port for RTC battery.

Best of all, GeekBox comes pre-installed with both Ubuntu Linux and Android 5.1 operating systems, allowing the user to switch between them with a single press of a button. As an alternative, users will be able to install the Android-based Light Biz OS from Rockchip.

The Kodi open-source media center software is also pre-installed for an out-of-the-box multimedia experience, capable of offering 4K*2K UHD video playback. GeekBox is now available for pre-order on the geekbuying.com, and can be yours for only $109.99 (~€100).
