Well-known Internet company Yahoo might be considering buying Foursquare, the mobile app which provides personalized recommendations of places to check out, based on users' location.

According to a TechCrunch report, the tech giant is willing to pay the impressive sum of $900 million (€838 million) for the mobile app.

Although some sources claim that this is only a rumor, there is no denying that the news did not surprise anyone, since it would not be the first time that Yahoo is reported to be checking into the app.

Mayer wants to turn Yahoo into a strong mobile company

Furthermore, it is a known fact that Yahoo has become more intent on developing its mobile division ever since Marissa Mayer took over the reins of the company.

She declared from the very beginning that she planned on reinventing the platform to adapt to the smartphone era. “Well, there was this web, and we’d crawl it, and rank it really well, and then phones came along. Smartphones! And we just took what we were doing and shrunk it down,” she stated in an interview with Fast Company.

Recode, on the other hand, reports that their internal sources have revealed that they have not heard a thing about the alleged acquisition.

However, the question remains whether Yahoo is willing to buy Foursquare, since the latter has been going through tough times ever since it made the decision to split its app into two, given that neither of them managed to make much noise.

On the contrary, Swarm has experienced a slow but sure decline ever since its launch, having been placed at around 146 in the top of the most downloaded travel apps in the US, according to TechCrunch.

Yahoo has not released an official statement regarding these speculations, but the general impression is that the company is in fact quite likely to want to get its hands on Foursquare if it really plans to step up in the social environment and add another mobile app to its collection.
