Xiaomi is a very popular handset manufacturer from China which builds extremely well-specced devices that sell for affordable price tags.

That’s why customers love buying Xiaomi handsets and the community build around their products is a very active and involved.

One of the company’s most successful smartphones to date is the Redmi 1S which offers a great spec/price combo, so Xiaomi has sold tons throughout China and India (well until the Delhi High Court banned it from doing so).

Xiaomi Redmi 1S gets Lollipop treatment

Anyway, if you’re the owner of a Redmi 1S handset and you have been drooling over Android 5.0 Lollipop, we have good news for you.

An unofficial Android 5.0.1 Lollipop ROM has surfaced on the MIUI.com community forum. The ROM has been rated as excellent, so if you’re looking to tweak your device and give it a Lollipop infusion, this is where you can get it from.

However, there are a few things to consider before you get started. The Redmi 1S Android L Mokee ROM (as it is called) is actually based on the stock Lollipop version that was offered by Google and is not an official release by Xiaomi. This means Mokee is not the MIUI build of Lollipop.

Also, Mokee is currently in beta version, but the stable variant of the ROM should be out in about 10 days or so.

The good news is that the ROM comes pre-rooted, so that should help you get things moving along a lot faster.

In order to flash the ROM on your device, you’ll have to visit the MIUI forum, where you’ll also be able to check out a few screenshots of Lollipop 5.0.1 running on the Redmi 1S, so you can get an idea of what to expect.

Redmi 1S spec roundup

For those who don’t remember, the Redmi 1S comes equipped with a 4.7-inch 720p IPS LCD display (1280 x 720 resolution),

The device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.6GHz fitted with Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM plus 8GB of internal storage.

On the back of the device lives an 8MP camera while up in front resides a 1.6MP shooter for selfies. The Redmi 1S ships out with the outdated Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS, pre-installed with Xiaomi MIUI OS on top of it.

The Mokee ROM will give your handset a much-needed revamp in the OS department, but if you don’t want to go the risky way and install the beta version, you can wait a few more days before the stable build comes out.
