Microsoft has been seeing strong sales lately

According to industry sales tracker VGChartz, Microsoft's latest computer entertainment system, the Xbox One, might have passed the 10 million units sold mark this month.

VGChartz's William D'Angelo published the figures this weekend, stating that Microsoft achieved the feat on the week ending December 13, 2014, when it managed to sell approximately 550k units.

The surge in Xbox One sales is likely due to a temporary price cut of the console, that came into effect during the month of November, and is set to end at the beginning of January 2015.

Sony released its last sales information in September, when it mentioned that the PlayStation 4 home console sold over 13.5 million units, and VGChartz's estimates place that number at around 17 million now.

In any case, until the official numbers drop, take these figures with a moderately sized grain of salt. The folks at VGChartz are professional speculators, basing their numbers on a lot of stuff, including actual tracked sales data, but they have been wrong on more than one occasion.

It's probable, in spite of all the silence

It's unlikely that Microsoft would be so silent about such an achievement, especially since the company's last-released data only points to five million units being shipped worldwide, and dates from earlier this year, before the console had been launched in China and Japan, and before the aggressive push made during the last couple of months.

However, the numbers are most likely not that far off, given that during November Microsoft managed to secure the number one spot as far as hardware sales are concerned, for North America, as reported by consumer market research firm NPD Group.

Microsoft has revealed increased revenue in the division that also includes the Xbox One, but that also accounts for licensing fees from developers and publishers and Xbox Live revenue, as well as Xbox 360 sales.

For the time being, we are still waiting for official confirmation from Microsoft.
