Wargaming announces that its free-to-play vehicle combat video game World of Tanks is coming to the Xbox One home console sometime later this year.

The game features mid-20th century tanks and offers players the chance to engage in online, team versus team matches. Gamers can choose from a wide variety of vehicles, divided into light, medium and heavy tanks, tank destroyers, and self-propelled guns.

The developer has also announced that a battle server will be shared between the Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles from Microsoft, ensuring cross-platform play, and both systems will share content updates and community members, according to IGN.

World of Tanks is currently available on the Xbox 360 device for all Xbox Live Gold Members, as a freely downloadable video game with additional in-game purchases.

Players who opt to switch to the Xbox One edition of the video game will be able to carry over all their in-game progress and use the same accounts they use for the Xbox 360 version.

World of Tanks is a hugely popular video game, being the premier wargaming simulation when it comes to tank battles.

Another solid free-to-play game comes to Xbox One

Although it's a free-to-play game, it's pretty balanced, and skill plays a pretty big part when it comes to deciding who the victor is. In addition to this, World Of Tanks also has a pretty active pro scene, with a ton of players taking part in competitions regularly.

The game was initially released on PC in 2010, and since then is has continued to grow in scope, with developer Wargaming improving each and every aspect of the game, from faction balance to more varied vehicles being made available and overhauling the title's physics engine, in order to offer a more immersive experience for its players.

World of Tanks debuted on the Xbox 360 platform a year ago, in February 2014, and since then console players have destroyed over 570 million virtual tanks in online engagements.
