Bethesda and MachineGames confirm that they're going to debut a special Wolfenstein: The Old Blood standalone prequel to last year's stellar Wolfenstein: The New Order first-person shooter, which is set to arrive in May and will cost 20 USD/EUR across PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Wolfenstein: The New Order offered a really impressive first-person shooter experience when it appeared in spring of last year, delighting fans with retro-styled fast-paced gameplay while still focusing on the war against the Nazis in an alternate history where the evil faction won World War 2 and enslaved humanity.

Now, it seems that the reason why The New Order didn't get any sort of DLC was that developer MachineGames worked on a full-fledged standalone prequel experience called Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

The new title has just been confirmed on the official blog and promises to tell two separate stories that follow protagonist BJ Blazkowicz as he hunts down the coordinates to the compound of General Deathshead, ahead of the assault that represents the start of The New Order.

According to Bethesda, The Old Blood has two distinct parts, both chronicling encounters with powerful Nazi enemies, while BJ hunts down the aforementioned coordinates.

"Part one of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood – Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves — pits BJ Blazkowicz against a maniacal prison warden as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound. In part two – The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs – our hero’s search for the coordinates leads him to the city of Wulfburg where an obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power," the studio says.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood launches on May 5 worldwide for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It will cost $19.99 / £14.99 / €19.99 / $39.95 AUS. You don't have to own The New Order to play it as a standalone experience.
