Bank of America removes its app from the store

Bank of America has already announced its decision to remove its official app from the Windows Phone store, but as of today, the whole thing is official and users can no longer access their bank accounts from the devices powered by Microsoft's mobile OS.

The official Bank of America app for Windows Phone is no longer available in the store and users who have already installed it on their devices are no longer allowed to launch it, so they are provided with an error message telling them to access online banking with their browsers.

“We no longer support the app and you may not have browser access to bankofamerica.com for this device,” the error message showing up when launching the app reads.

“But you can access Online Banking through your laptop or desktop browser or a mobile device with a supported operating system. Just go to bankofamerica.com for a list of supported browsers and operating systems.”

Mobile Internet Explorer not working

What's worse, if you attempt to access the online banking account from your Windows Phone device, using Internet Explorer, you're just not allowed to do that because Microsoft's browser is not supported by Bank of America's website.

In other words, if you're on Windows Phone right now and have an account with Bank of American, you have absolutely no option to access your financial information from your mobile device.

Right now, there are absolutely no details as to when and how Windows Phone users would be allowed to access online banking services at Bank of America, but there's no doubt that this is quite a big hit that Microsoft receives exactly when struggling to make its mobile platform a bit more successful.

No matter if Microsoft wants to accept it or not, the lack of apps remains a big issue on Windows Phone, and more companies decide to remove their apps from the store just because development and work on updates do not pay off for a platform with such a small market share.

Update: if you switch your browser to desktop mode, the website still loads fine, but we're getting reports that authentication still fails. Another option would be to download a third-party browser and change the user agent to a supported platform, such as iPhone.

Thanks everyone for sending this in!
