HTC and Sprint are working to deliver the update this year

Most Nokia Lumia owners should be happy that Microsoft is trying to bring Windows Phone 8.1 on their devices as fast as possible. Although there still are some specific Lumia models that have yet to receive the update in some countries, most of the handsets have already got the stable version of Windows Phone 8.1.

We can’t say the same thing about smartphones manufactured by other companies like HTC and Huawei, for example. HTC has been struggling to offer the Windows Phone 8.1 update to 8X devices since the beginning of the fall.

What’s worse than waiting for a major update to arrive on your smartphone is not knowing if and when it will come. HTC has been very quiet about the rollout of the new firmware build.

The Taiwanese company has finally given up keeping the silence on the release of Windows Phone 8.1 after receiving lots of questions from discontent customers.

Back in September, HTC confirmed that Windows Phone 8.1 for the 8X should arrive sometime in October. The information was referring to Verizon’s version of HTC 8X, which is why we believed those with unlocked units should get it slightly earlier.

Even though Verizon is not among the carriers that bring major updates to their customers fast enough, we did not think Sprint would delay it even further.

Sprint 8XT owners will have to wait at least one more month for the update

Apparently, HTC USA has just confirmed that Sprint 8XT will receive the long-awaited Windows Phone 8.1 update in early December. This means that Windows Phone users who own this carrier-branded HTC 8X will have to wait at least one more month for the new build to arrive on their smartphones.

According to the Taiwanese handset maker, its engineers are working on making the update compatible with the HTC 8XT, which means that early December is just an ETA that might be subject to change.

Here is hoping that all HTC 8X owners will receive the Windows Phone 8.1 update sooner rather than later because, beginning next, year Microsoft should have a few new surprises for those who are using its mobile platform.

In other news, the 8X will be the only smartphone launched by HTC that will receive the Windows Phone 8.1, as the 8S does not seem to qualify for the upgrade.

HTC claims that hardware limitations prevent its engineers from bringing any major Windows Phone update on the 8S, so those who still own the smartphone may want to switch to a newer one.
