Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 is the latest update that Lumia smartphones were supposed to receive before Microsoft would release Windows 10 for Phones.

However, this update has been kind of a mystery since we've got word on it. Microsoft denied that it would offer the Windows 8.1 Update 2 to any Lumia smartphones, though there were many leaked screenshots showing this version of Windows Phone installed on some handsets.

Back in February, Microsoft announced that two new smartphones, the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640XL, would be released on the market this spring. These handsets are mid-range Windows Phones that don't stand out at first glance.

Obviously, these two particular smartphones are different from other Windows Phone devices because they are the only ones shipping with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 right out of the box.

Several weeks ago, Microsoft confirmed that Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 would be available to Lumia 830 and Lumia 735 smartphones in the coming weeks. Still, no other Lumia device has been confirmed to receive this update, but we don't rule out any possibility.

MKV video support is included in Windows 10 for Phones

More recently, some of those who have tried to update to the latest Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview build reported that their smartphones have been upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 first.

Since Lumia 640 and Lumia 640XL are already available on the market, we know most of the new features included. It's true that Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 brings quite a lot of improvements, which would be nice for all Lumia users.

One that seems to have been missed from the first reports is the fact that it brings support for MKV files. According to WindowsCentral, all Lumia smartphones that have Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 installed should feature Matroska MKV video support.

The good news is Microsoft has already implemented MKV video support in Windows 10 for phones, so everyone will be able to benefit from this feature when the new OS version gets released.
