14 DAY TRIAL // Many Windows Phone users have been expecting Microsoft to release another major update after GDR1, which should have added many more new features and improvements.
However, Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 will never be released on Lumia smartphones because Microsoft is now focusing on Windows 10 for Phones, which is supposed to arrive later this summer.
Microsoft's decision was probably based on the fact that the previous update for Windows Phone took a lot of time to be delivered to all compatible smartphones.
It would have probably taken Microsoft at least half a year to release GDR2 to all devices, and since all the new features will be part of Windows 10 for Phones, it makes sense to delay it for several months.
The good news is that those who don't want to wait until Microsoft releases Windows 10 to take advantage of these features can now purchase Lumia 640 or Lumia 640 XL smartphones, which both come with Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2.
This means that they are packed with several features that aren't yet available to other Windows Phones unless they are running Technical Previews.
These new features should be selling points for Lumia 640/Lumia 640 XL
One new feature that will be implemented in Windows 10 for Phones and is now available in GDR2 is support for Bluetooth keyboard.
WindowsCentral reports you can easily attach a Bluetooth keyboard to a Lumia 640 or Lumia 640 XL and write your documents in Word on your smartphone.
Another interesting feature that's now present in both Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL is the Reset Protection mode, which allows users to enable an anti-theft protection that will offer the security users are looking for these days.
When Reset Protection mode is enabled, no one other than you will be able to access the phone's content, even if a hard reset is performed or a new ROM is flashed.
As mentioned earlier, these new features and a lot more will be available in Windows 10 for Phones, so the sooner Microsoft release the new OS, the faster users will get access to them.
