Microsoft confirms low-end phones will also be supported

Windows 10 for phones preview will be available via a new Windows Insider program that will be accessible through a dedicated smartphone app, but information that recently reached the web made some people wonder whether their devices would also be supported or not.

Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, said in a short tweet that the company was working on a list of supported devices for Windows 10 for phones preview, suggesting that some Windows Phone models might need not be compatible with the early build of the new operating system.

Obviously, the first thing that popped up in our minds was that low-end models, such as the Lumia 520, won’t be supported because of their obviously reduced hardware capabilities, but it turns out that this isn’t the case. Or at least, that’s what the company says.

512MB also supported in “first preview”

Aul also confirmed in a recent tweet that 512MB devices will be supported by Windows 10 for phones preview, but also added something that’s interesting, to say the least.

“Yes, we'll have 512MB devices for 1st prvw,” he briefly said in a short tweet.

Basically, low-end devices, such as the Lumia 520, which only has 512MB of RAM, will also be allowed to install Windows 10 for phones preview, but according to Aul’s statement, this will only be valid for the first preview.

Does this mean that some devices might not be allowed to upgrade to another preview build of the OS when it becomes available? Probably, but more details are expected to be provided when this early version of the operating system is released.

Microsoft hasn’t yet provided any details regarding the release date of Windows 10 for phones preview, but some users have already received it, so the rollout could take place in stages in order to make sure that everyone can download it without experiencing any issues.

An official announcement on this will probably be released in the coming days, so keep an eye on our news section to find out when this happens.
