14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 10 will come with native support for FLAC and MKV on the PC, and it turns out that Microsoft is working to bring these two formats on phones as well.
Only FLAC support has been confirmed so far, but since Microsoft is working to make all Windows 10 versions offer the same experience no matter the device, there's no doubt that MKV support for phones is also on the table right now.
Joe Belfiore has recently confirmed on Twitter that FLAC support will be natively provided on Windows 10 for Phones, but this particular feature won't be offered from the very beginning in the preview build but only added at a later time, through the update system.
Also coming on small tablets
With Windows 10, Microsoft is bringing the same operating system on phones and small tablets, which basically means that Windows RT will no longer be installed on new devices.
The software giant says that most of the improvements that are planned for phones will also be available on small tablets, since the same operating system will be powering both, so the aforementioned FLAC support will also be offered as native on tablets.
Right now, there's no timeline available for the upcoming preview builds for smartphones, but the first testing version will be released in February, while updates will be shipped in the next few months.
As for the official launch date of the full product, Microsoft has remained tight-lipped on this, but people close to the matter claim that Windows 10 is very likely to ship in the fall of 2015, after eventually reaching RTM in the middle of the summer.
Windows 10 for Phones should launch together with the PC version, so expect all devices to be refreshed later this year with this new operating system and a plethora of new features.
