Microsoft confirms that 512 MB devices are also supported

Microsoft has already confirmed that Windows 10 will also support phones with 512MB of RAM, and now the company reveals that the new operating system runs very smoothly on such devices, even though some features are indeed missing.

Head of the Windows Insider program Gabriel Aul has written on Twitter that a Lumia 635 is now his daily testing device for Windows 10 for phones, which appears to run the revamped platform "very smoothly overall."

Details have not yet been provided, but this is clearly a good thing, given the fact that these particular devices are still the most popular in the Windows Phone lineup. Lumia 520, for example, is currently the top Windows Phone model on the market and is very likely to remain so until new affordable devices are released.

Windows 10 for phones preview coming this week

Microsoft previously said that Windows 10 for phones would launch in February, but right now the company is conducting internal testing of these early bits, so it might take a little bit longer until we finally get our hands on the new mobile OS.

At first, the release will only be available on a subset of phones, so not everyone with a Windows Phone will be able to take the new Windows 10 for a spin, but the company promised to ship it to more devices in the coming months.

Windows 10 for phones preview will be rolled out through a new Windows Insider program specifically launched for smartphones, and a dedicated app that's available in the store will provide you with the downloadable bits of the platform.

However, more details on the devices supported by the new release, as well as information on the available features, will be provided when the first Windows 10 for phones preview becomes available for everyone, but keep in mind that this could be a buggy build that might include a number of issues, so do not install it on your main phone.
