Bio Enrollment app is there but not working right now

Microsoft has already confirmed that it's working to make Windows 10 a little bit more secure by turning to a brand new biometric authentication system called Windows Hello, which is in essence an alternative way of securing your system without a password.

Windows 10 build 10049, which debuted earlier today for Windows insiders enrolled in the fast ring, comes with what seems to be the very first implementation of such functionality, but the amount of information available right now is painfully limited.

Called “Bio Enrollment,” this new app appears to be the foundation of Redmond's new biometric authentication system, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working right now, so it's hard to tell if any features have already been implemented.

A shortcut for the app is being placed in the “Recently added” section of the Start menu on every Windows 10 build 10049 install, and clicking it gets you to the store, where more information was probably supposed to be available. The store link, however, appears to be broken, and the app is nowhere to be found right now, so it seems that Microsoft is not yet ready to share more about this app.

Face and iris authentication

Bio Enrollment, which might be an app helping you configure biometric authentication, is expected to be the foundation of Windows Hello, a new feature scheduled to debut in Windows 10 that would secure a computer with the administrator's face, iris, or fingerprint.

Windows Hello uses both new software and hardware to protect a specific computer and is expected to contribute to a gradual replacement of passwords, which are quickly becoming easier to crack.

“For facial or iris detection, Windows Hello uses a combination of special hardware and software to accurately verify it is you - not a picture of you or someone trying to impersonate you. The cameras use infrared technology to identify your face or iris and can recognize you in a variety of lighting conditions,” Microsoft explained.

As said, specifics on Bio Enrollment app do not exist right now, so we've reached out to Microsoft for more information on its purpose and feature lineup. Please note that we have no confirmation that Bio Enrollment is there for biometric authentication, so don't take anything for granted until we get a response from Microsoft.
