Microsoft has already started work on Windows 10, and as part of the new OS release, the company will also ship an update for Windows Phone that will bring the smartphone platform closer to its desktop sibling.

Called Windows 10 for phones, the new OS version is already bringing more people on Windows Phone, most likely thanks to news and rumors regarding the changes that will be part of the upcoming release.

Windows 10 for phones will be available free of charge for all Windows Phone devices, and absolutely all handsets will be upgradeable to this version (including those with 512 MB of RAM, which could indeed lack some options).

According to information provided by Microsoft at MWC 2015 and revealed in a video on Channel9, the Windows 10 frenzy really helped boost the number of users, so in the last 12 months, the number of Windows Phone active users grew by 50 percent.

More apps, more devices

At the same time, the company has also confirmed that more developers are building apps for Windows Phone these days, so right now, there are more than 400,000 items in the store, an increase of more than 60 percent in the last year.

Redmond says that this growth was made possible thanks to the increasing number of devices that have recently hit the market, as Microsoft worked at full speed to expand its Lumia lineup as much as possible.

What's more, the company is also working to bring new flagships to the market, and sources say that they are all expected to see the light of day later this year, most likely together with Windows 10 for phones or shortly after that.

Successors to Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 are both projected to launch later this year, sources add, and they will be both powered by Windows 10 for phones.
