Microsoft presented the new OS yesterday in San Francisco

Redmond-based software giant Microsoft yesterday unveiled the new Windows 10, an operating system that’s expected to debut in preview form today and as a final product in spring 2015.

Even though the name is a bit surprising given the fact that Microsoft was believed to call the operating system Windows, Windows 9, or Windows Threshold, the feature lineup doesn’t bring too many changes as compared to the ones we’ve seen recently in leaked screenshots.

Windows 10 was designed from the very beginning to improve the desktop and make the operating system better for those using a mouse and a keyboard by adding new features or improving the existing ones with options that aren’t exclusively aimed at touch-capable devices.

Microsoft’s decision not to stream the Windows 10 unveiling online was a bit surprising given the growing interest in this particular product in the last few months, but the company has now decided to publish the full event and thus let everyone see the product in action on the San Francisco stage.

Windows 10 preview to debut today

Microsoft will release the very first testing build of Windows 10 today as part of its Windows Insider Program, thus giving everyone the chance to see what’s new for the operating system on their PCs.

Needless to say, the company explained that users should not install Windows 10 on their main PCs, as this continues to be an unfinished product that might come with bugs and other issues which could overall affect users’ performance with the new operating system.

The preview build will receive regular updates through a new update system, independent from Windows Update, which would enable Microsoft to deliver significant improvements to computers without the need for a fresh install.

The company says that the stable build of Windows 10 could see daylight in early 2015, but no other specifics have been provided until now. People close to the matter hinted that Windows 10 could be released in April 2015, but Microsoft hasn’t said anything besides “spring 2015.”

Windows Phone 10 also coming

Yesterday’s event didn’t bring any news for Windows Phone users, as the entire conference was only focused on the desktop side of the operating system and the improvements it brings on the traditional PC.

However, Joe Belfiore revealed that Windows 10 was also the next version of Windows Phone, and even though no other specifics have been provided, we heard that a preview build could come in early 2015 as well.

Everyone’s now waiting for the Windows 10 preview download links to go live, but in the meantime, watch the full unveiling conference to see what the OS can do on your PC.
