Microsoft has revealed that Wasteland 2, inXile Entertainment's highly acclaimed role-playing game, is headed to the Xbox One home console sometime soon.

Wasteland 2 is the official sequel to the 1988 classic Wasteland, considered the main source of inspiration for the Fallout franchise.

The game came to life via a very successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, during a wave of high-profile projects being launched on the website.

Wasteland 2 was released on September 19, 2014, for Windows, OS X and Linux, and was met with positive reviews from both critics and gamers, being lauded for its writing, for the rich, branching story that emphasizes player agency, and for its solid combat.

Given the fact that the game was designed to enable users to write their own story, complete with the freedom to choose their own response to pretty much every possible situation that occurs, Wasteland 2 also has a high degree of replayability.

The story is set in an alternate history timeline, in the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse, where players step into the shoes of a Desert Ranger, controlling a squad of newly recruited members, tasked with the investigation of a murder.

Over the course of the story, players get to meet a ton of colorful characters, each with their own personality and motivation, and uncover a new threat that looms over mankind, in the form of synthetic humans and artificial intelligences similar to the ones players fought during the original Wasteland.

Developer inXile Entertainment is currently working on moving the game's codebase from Unity 4.5 to Unity 5, which will allow for better visuals, and is also planning to add several gameplay improvements.

Although Microsoft has announced that the game is headed to the Xbox One, the company has failed to provide a clear timeline for when this would occur. In any case, we'll keep our eyes open and come back with the news.
