Verizon Wireless has started updating its WP devices today

The whole world started getting the Denim firmware update a couple of days ago and now it seems that Verizon customers with Windows Phones are receiving some goodies as well.

Microsoft and Verizon announced that both the Lumia 822 and the Lumia 928 would be updated to Windows Phone 8.1 and Denim, but before putting your party hat on, there’s one more thing you should know.

While Verizon indeed started updating its Windows Phone devices, the Icon, which continues to be considered the flagship model in this lineup, won’t get the 8.1 and Denim treatment until early 2015. Why exactly? Nobody knows for sure, but Microsoft says that all Icons should be updated in January.

“Today we are confirming that the Lumia Icon will receive the upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 in early 2015. This upgrade will also be the Lumia Denim update!” Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc said.

Other devices also getting the updates

There’s no doubt that this new update rollout comes in very handy to many, especially after the criticism that reached the web in the last few months blasting Verizon for neglecting its Windows Phone users.

There were people who stopped using Windows Phone just because Verizon didn’t release new updates for their devices, so Microsoft stepped in and worked together with the company to solve this issue.

That’s what the company said in a statement today, pointing out that it was working with carriers to make updates for Windows Phone available to as many customers as possible in the shortest time.

“To deliver upgrades for Windows Phones, we work really closely with carriers like Verizon to make sure these upgrades bring the best experience possible for customers. These upgrades go through extensive lab testing to ensure quality and mitigate any network-dependent issues. Because of this, delivery timelines for upgrades can vary carrier to carrier (and even by device),” it stated.

In addition to the aforementioned Lumia models, other devices are also getting Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, including the HTC One M8 for Windows and the Samsung ATIV SE. Unfortunately, there are no specifics available right now, as Verizon only added that this would happen “very soon.”

Most likely, these models will be updated by the end of the month or in early 2015 together with the Icon. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for some words on these updates and will update the article soon.

In the meantime, make sure you update your phone to get the latest enhancements, including Cortana and live folders. Other Lumia users across the world are also getting their own share of goodies packed in the Denim firmware update, but the rollout takes place gradually.
