Windows 10 Preview is now available for download, so everyone can finally give it a try, and as a result of the growing interest in the new operating system, developers have already started tweaking their apps to get in line with the improvements made by Microsoft to its software.

VideoLAN is one of the first companies that are planning to launch an app optimized for Windows 10, so its famous VLC player is scheduled to get a significant makeover in the coming days.

Software developers working for VideoLAN announced on Twitter that VLC media player would be updated in the coming days, so a new version should be available to those who already installed Windows 10 from the store.

No specifics have been provided, but the team behind the app did publish a screenshot that indeed shows a revamped interface which could come in more handy to those running Windows 10 on a desktop or laptop and using a mouse and keyboard as the preferred input method.

Revamped UI and windowed mode

The provided screenshot shows VLC running its very own window right on the desktop, just like it's the case right now with all the other apps on Windows 10.

Microsoft's new operating system brings features that allow users to launch Metro apps right on the desktop and resize windows as they do with standard programs, so the experience they get with touch-optimized software should now be more appropriate for a mouse and keyboard too.

VLC will run in its own window as well, and as you can see for yourselves in the photo, it also features a new layout and buttons that allow you to quickly access its main options.

Metro app or the desktop version?

The arrival of an updated Modern port of the VLC app could create more confusion for beginners who might have a hard time figuring out which version they actually need: the Metro or the desktop one?

At this point, the desktop version of VLC provides outstanding features and is pretty much the best option to watch videos on a computer, as it includes support for a wide array of formats, a clean UI, and has a very low footprint on system performance.

The Modern version, on the other hand, comes with a simpler design, the essential features and support for the common multimedia formats, so in the end, it's only up to users to decide which flavor they actually want on their Windows 10 devices.
