A number of other fixes will be implemented as well

A new update for the RTM branch of Ubuntu Touch is in the works, and the developers are making the final adjustments. Users should see improvements in battery life, among other changes.

Canonical has several different Ubuntu Touch branches that it maintained and developed. With the release of the Bq phone, a new branch was created specifically for that phone, but it doesn't mean the previous RTM branch is no longer maintained by its makers. After all, Nexus 4 is still the principle development platform and the RTM branch caters specifically for those devices.

The developers have issued a few important updates for RTM in the past few months, but the rhythm has decreased somewhat. That is understandable because there are no major changes left to be made and no new features to be added. It's mostly a bug hunt that intensifies whenever a major component, like Mir, for example, is being upgraded.

A new Ubuntu Touch RTM update is in the works

The Ubuntu developers have been gathering bug reports and other issues from the community, and many of the suggestions will end in the upcoming update. The fact that many regular users have managed to get their hands on an Ubuntu device means that the number of bug reports has also increased. The team needs to deal with them as soon as possible.

"This week we will be concentrating on OTA-3 from ubuntu-rtm/14.09. We aren't quite there yet as a few critical fixes are still in the works, so our promotion candidate creation might get delayed a day or two. Even in the best case, since there are holidays nearing for some countries, the best estimate for the OTA-3 to become available for users would be somewhere next week. As always this update will provide stability improvements and bugfixes, we're expecting the battery usage to be slightly better afterwards as well," wrote Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak in a mailing list message.

There are two ways of trying out the Ubuntu OS now. One is with a Nexus 4 device and the other with the Bq Aquaris e4.5 phone, which was made available through a few flash sales.
