The developers are working on a new patch

Canonical is preparing a major new update for Ubuntu Touch, but it will take a while until it's going to be ready. From the looks of it, the devs are preparing some interesting improvements and updates.

One of the most important changes that will be made to Ubuntu Touch is the fact that it will use a new base, meaning Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet). The cycle of the mobile version for Ubuntu doesn't follow the same schedule as the desktop one. This is the main reason they don't seem in sync, but that's not an actual problem for the developers.

Moving to another base is a difficult process, and it usually entails fixing bugs and other issues that pop up when using newer packages. The duration between the previous OTA and the next one might be a couple of weeks, but that was to be expected. The good news is that when OTA 4 will eventually land it will also pack some cool stuff, like a new Unity update.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-4 should be more than interesting

OTA stands for over the air. All the users who have a BQ or Nexus phone will get the new update from the official servers, just like it happens with Android. The only difference is that you don't have to wait months for it.

"The landing gates are officially closed for OTA-4 and QA will now be signing-off all the remaining, testing-ready silos. As mentioned in the announcement, we will try to build our first promotion candidate starting tomorrow. Fixes still expected to land are for instance: the alarm regression fix, new unity8 (mostly desktop-mode stuff), automatic brightness fixes and much more. There're around nine silos still in the queue - lots of good stuff," wrote Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak.

We'll try to find more details about the changes that are going to be implemented, but until then we'll just have to press the "check for updates" button.
