Some important updates are made to the distro

Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is just one of the many official Ubuntu flavors and its developers have been working to implement the latest version of GNOME 3.14.

One of the problems faced by the Ubuntu GNOME developers is the fact that their project is not in sync with GNOME, which puts a little bit of pressure on them. For example, they have been criticized for not having the latest GNOME desktop in Ubuntu 14.10, even if that particular piece of software was released after the feature freeze.

Even if they wanted to add all the most recent GNOME packages, it would still be quite a challenge because the base Ubuntu system is using some older versions. It would be very difficult to provide packages more advanced than Ubuntu. Right now, that's being done with the help of a PPA and various updates, but that might change in the future.

Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 finally gets GNOME 3.14

The Ubuntu devs finally decided to update most of their GNOME packages to more recent versions and that also helped the makers of Ubuntu GNOME to follow through very quickly.

"We're glad to announce that most of GNOME 3.14 is now in Vivid Vervet, there is just a handful of applications that need updating. These should hopefully all be done by Beta 1 and will be on the daily ISO builds very soon. As for the remaining GNOME 3.14 bits that have not landed yet are now in gnome3/vivid ppa."

"We are now starting to update gnome3-staging/vivid to GNOME 3.15 developement releases, so this PPA (Staging PPA) is back to being unstable, and people that want to stick with more stable GNOME 3.14 stack should switch to gnome3 ppa instead (only applies to Vivid of course)," said the Ali Linx.

The next Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 Alpha is expected to land in a couple of weeks, but until then you can always try the Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 daily edition of the distribution.
