The first development version for Ubuntu GNOME is out

The Ubuntu GNOME developers have released the first version of the 15.04 branch for their Linux distribution and it looks like this operating system is also going through some interesting changes, just like Ubuntu, although not on the same scale.

Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 Alpha 1 (Vivid Vervet) is the next version in the series and the first Alpha version has arrived with a moderate number of changes, although some important ones are being prepared and they will likely land in next devel iteration.

The GNOME edition of Ubuntu is a rather new addition to the family, but the developers have already released a few versions, including an LTS one.

One of the hottest topics around Ubuntu GNOME is definitely the default version of the GNOME integrated into the distribution. The 14.10 branch had GNOME 3.12, but some of the users wanted to see GNOME 3.14.

There are some constraints that prevent this from happening and we've talked about them in the past, but that might change in the future. For now, at least for this new iteration, the solution will consist in adding GNOME 3.14.

Developing a distribution is not an easy thing and the makers of Ubuntu GNOME really need the help of the community. They have said this on several occasions and this is still true. You don't even have to know how to code in order to help.

"We’re preparing Ubuntu GNOME Vivid Vervet (15.04) for distribution in April 23rd, 2015. With this Alpha 1 pre-release, you can see what we are trying out in preparation for our next (stable) version."

"We would like to thank our great helpful and very supportive testers. They have responded to our urgent call for help in no time. Having high quality testers on the team make us more confident this cycle will be extraordinary and needless to mention, that is an endless motivation for us to do more and give more. Thank you so much again for all those who helped to test Alpha 1 images," reads the official announcement.

The Ubuntu GNOME team also says that GNOME Shell 3.12 has been kept for now (it should change before Alpha 2), a number of the other packages have been updated to version 3.14, the GNOME terminal is transparent one more, and the button layout for the windows has been matched with the upstream version.

Users can download the latest Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 Alpha 1 from Softpedia. It's a developer release, so please be careful when installing or using it. You really shouldn't use a production machine for this one.
