Ubuntu devs are still tracking Linux kernel 4.1

Canonical, through Joseph Salisbury, has announced the summary of the Ubuntu Kernel Team meeting that took place on June 9, 2015, which concerns their activity on the Linux kernel packages for the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system.

Therefore, we can report today that the Ubuntu Kernel Team rebased the upcoming kernel 4.0 packages for the Ubuntu 15.10 distribution on the upstream Linux kernel 4.0.5, which was released this past weekend, on June 6, 2015.

At the moment, the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) daily build ISO images are still using the kernel packages of the Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) operating system, but that's about to change very soon because the 4.0.5-based kernels have been uploaded to the archive.

"We have rebased wily to 4.0.5 and have uploaded to the archive. We are investigating a build failure for ppc64el, but the other Arch's appear to be building cleanly," says Joseph Salisbury. "Please test and let us know your results. We will move to start tracking 4.1 on our master-next branch."

The Ubuntu developers started tracking Linux kernel 4.1

On the other hand, the Ubuntu Kernel Team is hard at work, as they announced plans to start tracking the upstream Linux 4.1 kernel, which should be the default kernel for the final version of the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system, due for release on October 22, 2015.

In two weeks from today, we will be able to test the first Alpha version from the Wily Werewolf development cycle, but only for the opt-in flavors, which means Kubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Lubuntu, and even Xubuntu. Ubuntu 15.10 will be available for testing in September 24, when the Final Beta is released.
