The update is pushed OTA (over the air), in waves

Motorola confirmed weeks ago that it would bring Android 5.1 Lollipop to most of its smartphones, but no exact release dates have been mentioned.

The good news is that US Cellular customers who own the Moto X (2nd Gen) or Moto E LTE will now be able to download Android 5.1 Lollipop on their smartphones.

In order to capture the update, make sure your smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi and that the battery is at least 50% charged.

If you haven't been notified on the update, you can manually check for it by heading to Settings / About phone / System updates. In case it doesn't show yet, you can try again later.

Keep in mind that the update is rolled out in stages, so it might take a few days until it reaches all compatible devices.

Android 5.1 Lollipop brings a few tweaks and improvements to Material Design, Google's new UI. It's also worth mentioning that Android 5.1 Lollipop adds dual-SIM support as native feature, but this is not the case for US Cellular's Moto X (2nd Gen) and Moto E LTE.

Device Protection and subtle visual changes

An important new feature included in this update, Device Protection is meant to prevent thieves from using your smartphone. Unfortunately, since US Cellular did not release an official changelog for the update, we can't confirm if it's included.

Some minor changes to the volume and interruptions sliders should be implemented as well, which will allow users to set “Priority” or “None” mode until their next alarm, or until the downtime ends.

New animations in apps like Clock should be present as well, but a new status bar icon should be included too for when you don't have a SIM inserted in the phone.

Android 5.1 Lollipop should also address the “memory leak” issue that affects lots of smartphones and tablets running Lollipop.
