April Fools film hoaxes are usually funny, generally frustrating and unequivocally fake. This trailer from IGN, for a “Back to the Future” reboot called “Fast to the Future” and starring Vin Diesel, is also fake. But it’s also pretty neat and partially makes you wish it were true.

Yesterday was the most misleading day of the year in terms of things you can trust from those you stumble across online. Major companies and publications did their best to deliver hoaxes and pranks as believable as they were awesome, and film outlet IGN was no different.

They mashed footage from “Back to the Future,” the classic film franchise starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, and “Fast and Furious” with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, and came up with a faux trailer for a reboot that would star Diesel.

The editing and post-production work make it convincing until the very last second, starting from the voiceover to Diesel’s apparent eagerness to go back in time to right some unspeakable wrong.

Hollywood has been remaking and rebooting classic franchises like crazy in the past several years, and this fake trailer shows that a “Back to the Future” reboot might actually work, if done right.

However, purist fans would probably rather Hollywood left their favorite untouched.
