Developer Jagex and publisher Hasbro have announced that Transformers Universe will be closing down at the end of January, 2015.

The shutdown period has already commenced, and a big part of the winding down will consist of refunding all the gamers who purchased Founders Packs, relic bundles, and starter packs.

The refunds will all be processed during the following 30 days, and the developer has also closed the ability to create new accounts.

People who already are in possession of a game account will still be able to make use of it, up to the closure date.

Additionally, Jagex will also switch off the ability for players to buy relic packs or starter bundles.

On January 31, all the servers and all the forums will be shut down and Transformers Universe accounts will be frozen. Players will still be able to make use of the accounts for another 60 days, for any final queries before they are all permanently deleted, on March 31, 2015.

The team has also informed users that they will be continuing to operate on the forums as normal and will still provide relevant updates to the website when necessary.

No more trucks in space

Transformers Universe started out as a massively multiplayer online game a few years back, but since then it made the transition to MOTA, which is a fancy name that the developers gave to the mashup of genres that the game consisted of.

Gamers would become the commanders of Transformer factions and would be tasked with the recruitment and training of a squad of robots that would battle other similar crews in arena settings.

The game went into open beta back in July this year, but apparently, it failed to garner the attention it hoped to achieve from the community.

No explanation has been provided for the decision to shut the game down, but the fact that it did not live to the companies' expectations is the most likely culprit.

The informative blurb on the Transformers Universe website states that the decisions "comes at an important time for both companies as they both realign their plans and focuses for 2015."

The blog entry ended with a plea to respect the position of the community management team, who will most likely be unable to comment on many issues related to the shutdown.

Jagex is currently working on Runescape, and has been for the last 13 years, with the massively online role-playing game still getting updates after all this time and still having a strong user base.

Perhaps now that Transformers Universe is no longer on Jagex's plate, the company will pick up Stellar Dawn again.
