Video game developer The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA announce that they are working on a new title called Total War Battles: Kingdom, which is designed to deliver an online persistent strategy experience that will serve as a companion piece to the upcoming Total War: Attila.

The team is delivering details via the attached video and a full Frequently Asked Questions document, and the experience is set to be launched on the PC and tablet devices, with a beta set to be introduced only on the first platform.

The official announcement states, “Combining realm building with large scale battles, players will find themselves managing the needs of their own fiefdom as they marshal increasingly impressive armies. Ultimately, players will be able to join in massed wars against other lords in a fight for the throne; backstabbing, betrayal, spying and underhand deception are all very much encouraged.”

Gamers who play Total War Battles: Kingdom will travel back to the Xth century, when the European states are just starting to form and gamers will need to use a variety of mechanics to compete against rivals and claim the throne.

The core structure will be free-to-play, but the team says that microtransactions will be used sparingly and in places where they make sense.

The new strategy title will include a realm building mode, in which gamers can build up infrastructure and prepare their forces, and a real time combat experience.

Total War Battles: Kingdom will not include any pay-to-win mechanics, according to The Creative Assembly. Total War Battles: Kingdom is not connected to Total War: Arena, which remains in development at the moment and will get more details in the coming months.

Total War: Attila remains the focus for the coming months

At the moment, most of the resources of the studio are focused on Attila, which will be offered only on the PC on February 15 in North America and on February 17 in Europe.

The new game is designed to explore the moment when the Roman Empire is being affected by the coming barbarian hordes, with elements like fear, fire, disease and climate change playing an important role.

The Creative Assembly wants gamers to face complex challenges, including the abandonment of settlements, and elements that have been absent from the franchise for a while, including marriage and the family tree, are being re-introduced.

A team is also working on more content for Rome II.
