TowerFall Ascension launched on the PS4 earlier this year, and now developer Matt Thorson confirms that a special expansion is set to debut in early 2015, that brings new towers, abilities, and a fresh character to sow havoc in the multiplayer experience.

TowerFall first rolled out as an ambitious competitive concept made by Matt Thorson for the Ouya microconsole but it eventually got fleshed out as TowerFall Ascension for the PS4, as well as for other platforms like the PC, Linux, or Mac OSX.

The game received critical acclaim for its intense action and quite a lot of players are still enjoying the archery combat provided by the indie experience.

Many have also forward feedback to Thorson over the last few months with suggestions for downloadable content or for a potential sequel.

An expansion called TowerFall Dark World is coming

After combing through the suggestions, while working on his own ideas, Thorson now confirms that an expansion called TowerFall Dark World is going to launch in early 2015 to provide quite a few new things.

"We want to call this an expansion rather than DLC, because it expands the game in every direction rather than providing small incremental additions. Approaching it this way allows us to tie all the new stuff together in a very cohesive manner. For you this means more playable archers, levels, modes, power-ups, variants, trials, and more," he explains on the PS blog.

A new character, new maps, and powers are included

Among the new things added to the Dark World expansion for TowerFall Ascension is a fresh character, in the form of the red archer called Vainglorious Ghoul. She is the captain of a ghost ship, and you'll get to visit the vessel as part of the four new level sets from the add-on. The last one features procedurally generated arenas which should make things even more varied and intense.

Among the new powers that can be wielded by players are the Trigger Arrows, which act as remote mines and can be triggered when enemies are near, or the Prism Arrows, which lock enemies in magical prisons so that they can't hide from your onslaught.

Lots more things are included in the TowerFall Dark World expansion but Thorson isn't quite ready to share details about all of them. He will, however, be present with a playable build of the new add-on at the PlayStation Experience event next month, so participants will be able to see the new content in action on the PS4.
