Director George Miller talks long gestation, Mel Gibson

One of the most hyped releases of 2015 is “Mad Max: Fury Road,” starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult, and directed by George Miller, who also helmed the original with Mel Gibson decades ago. The film is coming out in May, and to promote it, Hardy has landed the February 2015 cover of Empire magazine.

You will find his two covers in the gallery below; to paraphrase the trade publication, go ahead, check them out, because Hardy is one “handsome devil.”

The print issue of the publication, out on newsstands today, brings an interview with Miller himself, who explains the long gestation period of the franchise, how Mel Gibson almost became involved in it, and how he even considered the late Heath Ledger for the lead at one point.

It was Hardy who finally got it and he, together with Theron (Imperator Furiosa) and Hoult (Nux), will bring back some of the madness and mayhem from the 1979 original. Miller had previously said he filmed “Fury Road” as one continuous action shot, and the result is already visually impressive, as we’ve seen from the first full-length trailer (see below).

“Fury Road” was pushed back from release twice already, and reports claim that Warners is still trimming it and re-editing after screenings with target groups, not quite happy with the result. Hopefully, all that will be settled by May.
