A new report shared with the public by environmental group the World Wildlife Fund says that, this past November, wind farms in Scotland produced more energy than the overall domestic needs documented across the country.

More precisely, the wind farms now operational across the country's territory produced 7% more electricity than all Scottish households combined required to keep up and running all throughout the month.

For those who like numbers a wee more than they like percentages, the World Wildlife Fund says that, last month, Scottish wind farms fed an impressive 813GWh worth of power into the country's National Grid.

Wind power is having the time of its life in Scotland

In its report, the green-oriented organization goes on to detail that, by comparison, the rest of the UK only had 22% of its domestic energy needs met by wind power this past November. This just goes to show that, in Scotland, wind energy is pretty much having a whale of a time.

“Even on calmer days, when wind wasn't at its strongest, wind still supplied the equivalent of almost a third of electricity needs of every home. It's clear that wind is now a critical and growing part of our current power sector,” said environmentalist Lang Banks.

Truth be told, Scotland's wind industry did have a pretty bad day on November 15, when it only produced some 7,838MWh of energy, i.e. the equivalent of an estimated 31% of the country's total domestic needs, Click Green informs.

Then again, the World Wildlife Fund explains that, on November 11, they supplied 55,611MWh of power. As detailed by the environmentalists, this figure represents the equivalent of the energy demand of 22% of all of the households in Scotland.

Besides, data at hand shows that, on 11 out of the 30 days of November, Scottish wind farms provided enough energy to meet either 100% or sometimes even more of the country's combined domestic energy needs.

The actual power output was even greater

What's interesting is that, presently, Scotland is home to plenty of wind farms that, although completed and fully functional, are not connected to the grid. These fairly small wind turbines are in charge of powering individual homes and businesses.

Specialists say that, seeing how these other wind farms and isolated turbines do not feed energy into the country's National Grid, they were not included in the World Wildlife Fund's report. Still, the fact remains that they played their part in helping the country improve on its ecological footprint by promoting the use of clean energy.

Commenting on the findings of this report, Scotland’s Environment and Climate Change Minister Aileen McLeod pointed out, “Climate change affects every single person on this planet and so it is time for the global community to step up and follow Scotland’s lead.”
