14 DAY TRIAL // This is the last chance you have to preserve your DC Universe Online character name before developer Sony Online Entertainment rolls out the huge name reclaim on January 20.
The massively multiplayer online role-playing game enables users to play superhero, which is exciting and all, but as we all know, a superhero is only as good as their spandex costume and their catchy name.
The game is based on the DC Universe lore, and most superhero archetypes are based on popular existing comic characters.
A character name is a defining part of a player's online persona, and finding one that fits your character and your own creative needs can be difficult in games that have millions of registered players.
There most likely isn't one single serious MMO player out there who hasn't spent hours at a character creation screen, trying out all the different options and coming up with clever and meaningful names for potential in-game characters.
Sony Online Entertainment seems perfectly aware of this fact and is now looking to do the community a favor, in the form of the DCUO Name Reclaim 2015 campaign.
A new age of puns and epic monikers
Due to the fact that the game switched gear into the free-to-play realm a while ago, many gamers gave it a try and now a ton of fancy names are locked behind inactive accounts.
Sony Online Entertainment is now looking to free up some of those names for active and future players to make use of.
In a post on the game's forums, SOE details that character son accounts that have not logged into the game since July 20, 2013, will be renamed, having an underscore and a numeral added to the existing name.
The freed-up names will then become automatically available to all current players through the regular character creation or rename processes.
In case you're not that active anymore but would still like to preserver your name, this is pretty much your last chance. By simply logging in before January 20, 2015, you will be able to keep your chosen name.
SOE also advises players that they should warn any friends or league mates that would like to preserve their names to log into the game before the expiration date of January 20.
