Data shows where Microsoft sells most of its phones

Adoption of Microsoft's Windows Phone is on the rise in Europe, and new data offered by market researcher 51degrees shows that the Old Continent is becoming a much friendlier environment for Redmond's mobile platform.

The figures you see here do not indicate the market share in each shown country, but the percentage of Windows Phone sales for each of them (or Windows Phone sales per country, if you wish), so 14.29 percent of Microsoft's total sales in Europe, for instance, took place in Germany.

Italy continues to be Microsoft's biggest market for Windows Phone right now, as 38.84 percent of the WP devices sold on the Old Continent last month went to this country. France and the United Kingdom are also doing very well with 18.24 and 18.74 percent, respectively, while Spain got only 9.89 percent of the Windows Phone units sold in Europe.

Italy's growing appetite for Windows Phone

If we have a look at the whole picture, Italy, which is Microsoft's top market for Windows Phone, according to these figures, appears to be less interested in iOS and Android devices, with only 17.93 and 21.27 percent, respectively, of the total European sales of phones running these platforms taking place in the country.

Obviously, the number of sold units for both iOS and Android could be higher than that of Windows Phone, hence the percentage could be smaller, but this is clearly a sign that adoption of Microsoft's mobile platform is on the rise in Europe.

In fact, Europe has always been a market that posted bigger sales for Windows Phone than the United States, for instance, so Microsoft's increased focus on budget models could actually be the winning card here on the Old Continent.

Things could improve even further with the arrival of Windows 10 in the fall of 2015, as the new operating system will also arrive on phones with an overhauled UI, new features, and plenty of new apps coming from Android and iOS.

Thanks for the tip, Tim!
