The role-playing game looks stunning, and it's coming in May

Developer CD Projekt RED has explained why The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt doesn’t run at 60 frames per second on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 home consoles.

The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings are some of the most acclaimed modern role-playing games in the world, and rightly so. They offer a mix of mature and deep storylines and challenging and engaging gameplay that not many similar titles can provide, and they also manage to look absolutely stunning.

Granted, a great deal of the video game franchise’s success is due to the source material, Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of fantasy novels, which lend their enthralling quality to the games.

Most importantly, the games, just like the books, follow protagonist Geralt of Rivia’s exploits without having him single-handedly save the world, and they often delve into morally grey areas where it becomes difficult to discern right from wrong.

Hopefully, the gameplay will be on the same level as the visuals

One of the morally grey areas that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be delving into this May is the ongoing console war, through the reveal that the role-playing game would be running at 30 frames per second, both on the PS4 and the Xbox One.

Moreover, the Xbox One version will run in 900p resolution, while the PS4 one will feature full 1080p visuals.

CD Projekt RED’s Michal Krzeminski, the game’s senior art producer, addressed the concerns that the team had to scale back the framerate in order to account for performance issues.

“We don’t think like that. When you have a vision to create an RPG that will leave a long lasting impression, you don’t think in terms of resolution or frame rate. You think of adventure, you think of living worlds, and the stuff you’ll be able to do in that world.”

“Technical aspects are kind of secondary, which of course doesn’t mean that we don’t want the graphics to be awesome,” Michal told GamingBolt.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming out on May 19, headed to the Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms.
