Ready at Dawn might add the feature if fans want it

A photo mode option for The Order: 1886 might appear after the game's launch tomorrow on the PS4, but don't expect it to work in the title's many cutscenes, as developer Ready at Dawn took special care to make the cinematic sequences look even better than the regular gameplay.

The Order: 1886 is the next big PS4 exclusive game coming to Sony's home console, and like many others that appeared last year, it boasts some impressive visuals thanks to special cinematic techniques employed by studio Ready at Dawn.

Given this focus on great graphics, many fans wondered if a Photo mode option could be present in the game, much like the mechanics seen in past PS4 exclusives like The Last of Us: Remastered, Infamous: Second Son, or Driveclub.

Photo mode could be added to the game after launch

While talking with DualShockers, Ready at Dawn Chief Technical Officer Andrea Pessino confirms that the standard game won't have a Photo mode but the feature can certainly be added after launch through a free update, much like how things happened for Driveclub or Infamous: Second Son.

Pessino emphasizes that the game's visuals are quite complex, and ensuring that the Photo mode works as intended requires quite a bit of work. Even so, Ready at Dawn won't shy away from it if that's what players want.

"We haven’t announced anything yet, but I hope we’ll get to work on something like that, because I want to see it too," he says. "It would be really great. It’s not as easy as it seems, especially in our game because there’s all kinds of crazy stuff that happens behind the scenes to make it look so good, that once you freeze the camera and let the player move around, we have to be able to handle it correctly. So it would be a little bit of work, but it’s something that, if we manage to do, I think it would be really spectacular and add a lot to the game."

Don't expect it to work for the cutscenes, however

Pessino does emphasize that the Photo mode might not be working during the actual cutscenes, even if they're rendered in real time by the game's engine. Ready at Dawn specifically used fixed lighting and other effects to get the best results and moving the camera ruins the whole thing, according to him.

The Order: 1886 is set to debut tomorrow, February 20, exclusively for the PS4 platform all around the world.
