Last week we told you about the Samsung Galaxy Edge with Swarovski crystals which will probably go on sale for an outrageous amount of money.

While we wait on the announcement to be made, we bring you yet another story of an equally exorbitantly expensive handset.

Hanmac thinks Chin is a good place to sell luxury goods

Hanmac is a luxury smartphone maker hailing from France who has decided to branch out into China in the hopes of appealing to the country’s elite.

The company is selling two models: one which is called “Range” and one entitled “Defency” (an upgraded version called “New Defency” is also available).

The handsets feature a very post-modern steampunk-ish feel to them, and as you can very well see for yourself in the gallery, they look very atypical compared to what we would normally consider a smartphone standard.

We’re going to talk about the New Defency smartphone in particular now, because this model is quite interesting for a number of reasons.

Is MediaTek for the budget-conscious folks? Think again

First off, it’s the most expensive to feature a MediaTek processor. Usually when you think MediaTek, your mind immediately conjures up budget devices.

It’s not the case of New Defency, which will care a massive $6,000 / €5,321 hole in your bank account. For this amount of money, you’d think you’d be able to get stellar specs.

Interestingly, this is not exactly the case. Yes, the device comes equipped with a 3.5-inch sapphire crystal display but the rest of the internals fail to impress.

On the inside, pumping power into the luxury device we find a quad-core MediaTek 6580 processor clocked at 1.2GHz fitted with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The New Defency also enjoys a 13MP/5MP camera combo and is maintained alive by a 1,450 mAh battery. The outdated Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system is offered onboard, which is quite ridiculous given the fact that Android 5.0 Lollipop has been out and about for three months.

It’s the premium materials used to construct the device and the care put into the whole process that justifies the massive price tag.

Hanmac says that the handset takes 30 days to make. The company puts on the New Defency ceramic buttons, a fuselage made out of precious metal and rubber and also 18K gold and titanium insertions.

As we mentioned before, Hanmac hopes to sell the luxury product in China. Customers will be able to pick it up from select store locations in the country’s main cities.
