The multi-awarded The Last of Us is clearly getting a sequel, but that shouldn’t be surprising. Who wouldn’t want to monetize a very popular franchise? Although developer Naughty Dog has yet to make any official announcements, word has spread that The Last of Us 2 is already in the works.

The game that sold more than 8 million units worldwide, both on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, The Last of Us received more than 200 GOTY awards.

A film adaptation will be distributed as well, which will be written by Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s creative director. Even though he stated earlier this year that a sequel to The Last of Us has a 50/50 chance of being released, it now looks like the studio is focusing on finding new ideas for The Last of Us 2.

Michael Knowland is now a Senior Character Artist at Avalanche Studios who has been working for almost three years at Naughty Dog. Although his contract was terminated in April, 2014, he still got to work for about a month at The Last of Us 2.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he was prototyping head sculpts. He previously worked on The Last of US where he was the Lead Character Artist for all things main and NPC characters.

Moreover, Knowland was part of the team that is now developing Uncharted 4. He did some work on main character, Nathan Drake, where he upgraded the face sculpt, hair (geometry / texturing / shading), facial hair, rigging topology, skin textures and arm / hand details.

The sequel to The Last of Us will definitely be another Sony exclusive

The Last of Us 2 may be in early stages of development, but the fact that Naughty Dog has decided to start working on the sequel means that they have already found a story that’s worth telling.

Even if a sequel to the most awarded titles in the history of video games is now in development at Naughty Dog, it will take some time until details on The Last of Us 2 actually emerge.

Not to mention that an official announcement about the game has yet to be issued by Naughty Dog. However, we believe it’s too early for developers to make any official statements.

Perhaps they don’t even have a complete vision on how The Last of Us 2 will look and feel like, which is why they need more time. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one, so stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
