The gap may become larger over time due to friction

Unveiled in early September, Samsung newest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 4 has already been released in South Korea, but it will take a few more weeks until it goes on sale internationally.

However, it has come to our attention that customers who purchased the Galaxy Note 4 in South Korea found what they thought it was a defect inside the phablet.

Apparently, there’s a small gap between the display and the edges of the smartphone. Even though the gap is small, it’s large enough to fit a business card in, as one Galaxy Note 4 owner pointed out in a picture.

Anyone getting such an expensive smartphone would be concerned by the fact that its new shiny device seems to have a defect that makes it prone to getting water or dust inside.

We’re pretty sure you heard that before, but it looks like this is a feature and not a defect. The gap between the display and the phone’s edge is mentioned on the Galaxy Note 4’s manual as well, so it appears that Samsung has it covered.

Samsung says the gap may become larger due to friction

It’s also worth mentioning that the gap is listed in the troubleshooting section of the manual, so if you already own the Galaxy Note 4, you now know where to look. Here is how Samsung explains the presence of the small gap, as pointed out by SamMobile:

“A small gap appears around the outside of the device case. This gap is a necessary manufacturing feature and some minor rocking or vibration of parts may occur. Over time, friction between parts may cause this gap to expand slightly.”

Basically, if you had no reason to worry because the gap is small and it’s only large enough to insert a business card between the display and the outside case, after reading the Galaxy Note 4’s troubleshooting section you should start worrying, as this gap may become larger over time.

It’s unclear why Samsung chose to name this issue which is clearly a defect, a “necessary manufacturing feature,” but this may clearly lead to even more problems for the Galaxy Note 4 if this gap enlarges too much.

There aren’t any explanations on how to fix this issue and the reason is pretty simple, there’s no way that someone other than Samsung that can make this gap disappear and even that shouldn’t be possible for devices that already have this defect.
