Unless you feel they completely defeat the purpose

With how smart and quasi-autonomous flying drones have been getting, it was obvious that the entertainment industry would adopt them eventually. Looks like the big intro is coming right up.

Quadcopters have already started being used for film and photo shoots, as well as small-scale deployments and tricks.

However, it's one thing to remote-control a dozen quadcopters and have them line up at night, each shining a small LED to paint a pretty picture, and another one to make them the stars of a circus routine.

Yet that is precisely what the Royal Netherlands Air Force will be showing off at the AIR 2015.

The world's first drone entertainment show

The plan is to basically hold a huge spectacle in which robotic drones of various shapes and sizes, primarily flying ones, will do their best to blow your mind.

Quadcopters will fly around and paint shapes or images in the air just by shining their flares in specific patterns, for one thing.

Some will also go about flying through tunnels of light made of incandescent / LED circles suspended a good distance in the air.

You can expect to see small quadrotors, large quadcopters, floating ball-like things, all of them shining various colors as they soar through the mist.

The ambivalence

From reading through the comment sections of various websites, and the ones posted on the official Facebook page, the AIR 2015 show has not caused exclusively positive reactions.

While some people are looking forward to the new form of entertainment, others feel that it is just a copout in front of the real idea of a “circus.”

Paying to watch robots to entertain us is, apparently, not all that appealing to some people, which we suppose is as justified as any other point of view.

The date

No exact date has been set yet for the AIR 2015 drone “circus,” but we suspect it will happen at some point in the summer, since it's supposed to happen in a stadium. Then again, said stadium is intended to be one of those that can shut itself from the outside world by closing the canopy, so that might not be a perfect guess.
