Terraria, the two-dimensional pixelated sandbox, just got a brand new free update, adding a bunch of extra features, including some festive, limited-time-only items.

The special update is meant to bring some festive cheer to the world, but you might miss it if you don't hurry, as all the Holiday content will only be available until the end of the month, on December 31.

The update went live on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 home consoles on December 11, and today it joined the other side of the Force (the jury is still out whether it's the light or dark one), heading to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 systems.

The update also comes with a host of improvements and fixes, in addition to the wealth of fresh content, and will also be released for the PS Vita sometime this week.

The cross-play feature now functions properly between the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, so the whole family can come together around the Christmas tree. The Xbox One got its much-needed zoom functionality, which means that you'll be able to explore and create at whatever scale you choose.

In addition to this, some new mechanics have been introduced, such as the ability to place and stack Christmas presents. The festive Candy Cane blocks will also auto-stack when retrieved from presents.

Some festive loot

Developer Re-Logic added a bunch of new items to the side-scrolling world exploration and creation video game, even going as far as teasing an appearance by Santa Claus himself.

Players will get to enjoy some new tools and weapons, as well as exclusive items that can only be received from presents.

Everyone will be able to build their own Christmas tree, complete with some merry decoration, to set the festive mood right.

New building blocks, such as the Pine Tree Block, Pine Table, Pine Chair and Pine Door will become available for those looking for a crib makeover, and a handful of thematic consumables, including Christmas Pudding, Gingerbread Cookies and Eggnog, are now available for gourmands to enjoy.

Terraria was only released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems in November this year, but it's been made available on pretty much every platform imaginable (apart from Nintendo's, although it's a shame).

The developer also assured Windows Phone and Amazon device owners that the team was hard at work and that the update would also be released for them pretty soon.
