Over the weekend, a teenager in the US set a new world record when he solved a Rubik's cube in just 5.25 seconds. The performance was caught on camera and the video is available below.

Fair warning, you might have to watch it several times as it all happens so fast that the Rubik's cube gets assembled long before people with untrained eyes can even hope to make sense of what it is that they're seeing.

Solving Rubik's cubes comes naturally for this teenager

The young man, named Collin Burns, set the new world record for solving a Rubik's cube while taking part in a competition held at a high school in the city of Doylestown in Pennsylvania, US.

As explained by Phys Org, the event is officially recognized by the World Cube Association, an organization that holds and regulates Rubik's Cube competitions.

The video shows Collin Burns grabbing a 3x3x3 Rubik's cube, twisting it around in the air and arranging all its tiles in their proper place, and then putting it back on the table, all in 5.25 seconds.

Not long after the competition, on Sunday, representatives of the World Cube Association confirmed that, when solving this puzzle, the teenager had, in fact, set a new record.

“To our best knowledge, it has been performed in an official competition, with all the rules being followed, even the scramble has been checked for its correctness,” the Association wrote in a statement.

The previous record for solving a Rubik's cube was held by a Mats Valk from the Netherlands, who managed to solve such a puzzle in merely 5.55 seconds.

An international championship will soon take place in Brazil

Later this year, between July 17 and 19, the World Cube Association's Rubik's Cube World Championship is scheduled to take place in the city of São Paulo in Brazil.

As part of this competition, people will not only solve Rubik's cubes, but some will try to do so while blindfolded. Given his recent success, odds are Collin Burns will too sign up to participate in this event.
