The first-person fantasy dungeon crawler looked very interesting, but it failed to meet the studio's expectations

Techland just announced that Hellraid would no longer be released this year, and that development on the title has been put on hold for now.

Hellraid is a first-person hack-and-slash video game, set in a fantasy world of swords and sorcery. Given the company's track record with Dead Island and Call of Juarez, and most recently with the really solid Dying Light, this piece of news will disappoint a lot of gamers.

The dungeon crawler looked like a really enjoyable game, with a complex melee system, spell slinging, skill trees, and hordes of undead to slay. You can catch a glimpse of its interesting gameplay in a video showing the devs going through its first level, available below.

"We would like to officially announce that our dark fantasy FPP game Hellraid will not be released this year as previously planned, and the development of the game has been put on hold," the blog post on the game's website reads.

Apparently, Hellraid did not meet the studio's internal expectations, and is being sent back to the drawing board. Granted, the game was initially supposed to come out back in 2013, and was then pushed back repeatedly in order to be released on the new generation of consoles.

The studio is focusing on Dying Light for now

Now, it seems that the project is in limbo, with the studio focusing its efforts on expanding the Dying Light franchise. The first-person zombie survival video game has been a pretty big hit, and the company has been hammering away at the experience since its launch back in January, in order to make things better and better for its fans.

The devs plan to release some pretty robust modding tools, in order to allow the community to go wild, just like it did with its previous zombie survival title, Dead Island. There's also a piece of cooperative DLC coming out next week, titled Bozak's Horde.

It's still sad to see Hellraid get the boot, as there is currently no outlet for those who want to indulge in some first-person cooperative fantasy action. The title seemed to hold real potential, and hopefully Techland will come back to it sometime soon.
