Tails, the Amnesic Incognito Live CD distribution of GNU/Linux based on Debian and used by Edward Snowden, has reached version 1.3 on February 24, 2015. This release introduces new applications, updates core components, and fixes annoying bugs from previous releases of the product.

According to the official release notes, Tails 1.3 introduces Electrum, an open-source and easy-to-use bitcoin wallet. As we’ve reported from the RC (Release Candidate) version of Tails 1.3, users will be able to store their bitcoin data on the Live CD by using the Bitcoin Client persistence feature. The Electrum’s configuration files can also be stored.

The powerful TOR Browser Bundle, an anonymous web browser developed by the Tor Project, received an important update that brings enhanced security for both your personal data and the host operating system by restricting reads and writes to only some folders. Version 4.0.4 of the Tor Browser is installed in Tails 1.3, based on Mozilla Firefox 31.5.0 ESR.

Users can now hide their Tor traffic from government agencies

Moreover, we can report that the obfs4 pluggable transport has been implemented in Tails 1.3, allowing users to connect to Tor bridges. This can be used with success to camouflage Tor traffic from government agencies. Keyringer has also been added, enabling users to manage and share secrets using the Git and OpenPGP technologies.

The manual installation script received some attention in Tails 1.3 and it now no longer requires users to invoke the isohybrid command on GNU/Linux or Mac OS X operating systems. Because of this, the entire installation process has been simplified. Furthermore, support for the Ibus Vietnamese input method has been added, support for OpenPGP smartcards has been improved thanks to GnuPG 2, and the two-finger scrolling and tap-to-click trackpad settings are now enabled by default.

Tor Browser Bundle has been updated to version 4.0.4

Unfortunately, a known issue remains in this stable release of the Tails anonymous Live CD operating system based on the Linux kernel and Debian GNU/Linux. The issue is related to the Tor Browser Bundle which has version 2.6.9.14 of the NoScript add-on, instead of version 2.6.9.15 used in the official Tor Browser 4.0.4 web browser.

Download Tails 1.3 right now from Softpedia. Please note that the distribution is available for download for free, as a Live DVD ISO image that must be burned onto a blank DVD disc or written on a USB flash drive of 1GB or higher capacity. It contains software packages optimized only for 32-bit computer, but it is bootable on both 32 and 64-bit PCs.
