​Twitter Is Slowly Rolling Out Its Tailored Trends for Web

At the beginning of the month, Twitter announced that it was working on some changes regarding its trending topics feature on mobile, and it seems that they are planning on making it available on web as well.

The microblogging site also revealed that it was dropping the Discover button and that it planned on accompanying the trends of a short description to make sure users understood exactly what the subject was about.

Given that some trending topics could be harder to comprehend, especially if they are made up of only one word or an abbreviation that the public is not familiar with, Twitter thought of making things easier by introducing some additional information next to the trend, and even an image to help users get more acquainted with the subject.

Since for such a big platform like Twitter where billions of tweets are sent every day, trending topics is a vital tool for users to keep up with what really matters to them as well as staying informed about the most recent events taking place around the world, a change like this was imminent.

Trends will be more complex

Because the rather simplistic hashtags were a bit confusing, forcing users to click on them and scroll through the whole content until finding some relevant information to help them get a clear picture, Twitter came up with the idea of adding three vital elements to each trending topic: a description, an image and “Twitter-specific information” meaning the number of times that the topic in question has been retweeted, letting users know the amount of attention it has managed to garner.

As promised, the networking site has already started rolling out the features. It was announced that this change will also be implemented in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Since the Discover tab has already disappeared from mobile, it is very likely that Twitter will soon drop it from the website as well. Not that it will be missed, though, since other more efficient tools have been introduced like While You Were Away or Highlights.
