The Wraith relies on cunning, timing and distraction, separating the hunters and picking them off one by one

Developer Turtle Rock Studios has made the official reveal of the Wraith, the third big bad monster from its upcoming multiplayer first-person shooter Evolve.

The shooter pits a team of four hunters against a deadly beast, and is setting up to be one of the most exciting releases of the beginning of the next year.

Players will be able to choose from three individuals in each of the four classes, trapper, medic, support, and assault, and a fifth player will take the role of one of four monsters. The two teams will then engage in a brutal and strategic battle, in what is perhaps the most interesting piece of asymmetrical multiplayer shooting action ever seen.

The Wraith trailer was leaked this morning, and we posted an off-screen recording of it, but now the proper footage is out. So far, Turtle Rock has revealed two of the total four monsters from Evolve, the Goliath and the Kraken.

The Wraith is a stealth-based creature, which relies on cunning, subterfuge and proper timing, as opposed to the Goliath, which relies on pure strength, and the Kraken, which uses its immense agility as its main way of dealing with hunting parties.

Silent and deadly

The stealthy assassin is a "space alien ninja monster who warps around the battlefield, ripping into her enemies with her blade-claws," as the developers themselves describe it.

The Wraith has some pretty unique abilities at its disposal, starting with the Warp Blast, enabling it to travel almost instantly to its target, and causing an explosion on landing.

The Decoy ability creates a dangerous clone that attacks targets, meant to distract the hunters from the Wraith's true purpose. The monster becomes invisible after deploying the clone, allowing it to make a quick getaway or to gain a more favorable position for a surprise attack.

The Abduction ability steals a hunter from the midst of its companions. The attack enables the Wraith to travel over large distances, grab the target, and then return to its original position almost instantly.

Last, but not least, the Supernova skill creates a sort of arena for the Wraith to fight in, bestowing great combat prowess upon it, transforming it into a frenzied melee beast.

However, as the Wraith lacks the massive health and impenetrable armor of the Goliath, its pilot must always lurk in the shadows, using the four abilities to their fullest in order to disorient and separate the enemy team, picking off hunters one by one rather than engaging them head-first.

Evolve is coming out on February 10, 2015, headed to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
