Or so say the brains behind a new spray that promises to help folks fall asleep within just one hour after using it

We usually go for the serious science news that can make and break the world as we know it, and rightfully so. Still, there is no way we could have passed up the opportunity to spend a few minutes talking about this new spray that promises to help guys and gals get a good night's rest.

That's right, some brainiacs actually took the time to develop a spray designed not to help folks smell better than they would if left to deal with their sweat and skin bacteria all by themselves but to make it easier for people to fall asleep at night.

Just two puffs should do the trick

The spray, dubbed Sprayable Sleep, is the work of a Stanford University start-up. Its makers say that just two squirts on the neck are more than enough to put guys and gals into a surprisingly deep sleep within just one hour after use.

Apparently, those who are in the habit of waking up in the middle of the night, be it to admire the starry sky or to closely inspect the content of their fridge, can always go for one extra squirt to send them right back to sleep shortly after waking up for no good reason.

OK, so how does the spray work?

This Sprayable Sleep that the Stanford University start-up expects will help a whole lot of people now struggling to fall asleep get a good night's rest contains melatonin, which is a hormone naturally produced by the body, tyrosine, described as a derivative of an amino acid, and water.

Apparently, it is the melatonin in the spray that makes people take a sudden interest in closing their eyes and keeping them so until morning. This is because the human body itself is supposed to produce melatonin when it gets dark outside.

“Sprayable gives you the exact level of melatonin you need (often 30 times less than you ingest with pills) and delivers it gradually over time - mimicking how your body naturally produces and uses melatonin,” say the spray's creators.

“Sprayable Sleep puts you in control of your sleep. Whether you’re traveling and have jet lag or are working the night shift, Sprayable will help you get to sleep when you want so you’re refreshed and alert when you need it most,” they add.

There's just one downside

The only problem is that, for the time being at least, this one-of-a-kind and quite quirky melatonin spray is not available for purchase. In fact, the spray is still in its development phase, which means that its creators are still working on fine-tuning the recipe.

Still, the good news is that those ready and willing to contribute $85 (about €76) to the fundraising campaign in support of this project now ongoing on Indiegogo can hope to get a Sprayable Sleep prototype sometime this coming February.
