SparkyLinux 3.6, a lightweight, fast, and simple Linux distribution designed for both old and new computers featuring customized e19, JWM and Openbox desktops has been released and is now ready for download.

A new version of the SparkyLinux "Annagerman" distro has been released and this time it's about the e19, JWM and Openbox editions. This is an operating system based on Debian and it's been around for a long time. In fact, this particular distro covers a large array of desktop environments that are usually ignored by some of the bigger brethren. The flavors that have been made available are the lighter ones.

Users with low-end hardware will be happy to test this new release, since they are the main audience. It doesn't mean that people with newer hardware won't be able to give it a go. All the editions come as Live CDs, so they should be pretty easy to test.

SparkyLinux 3.6 comes with free editions

Some of the Linux users don't want to have anything to do with software that is not completely free, and that means proprietary drivers or even codecs. The developer has put together versions that can cater to everyone's needs.

"SparkyLinux is out with ISO images of Sparky 3.6 e19, JWM and Openbox belong to the Base Edition. Base Edition features core system, X server, window manager, web browser, text editor and a few tools. All the ISO images of Base Editions 3.6 are codecs free. It means that they don't have preinstalled multimedia codecs, players, editors or plugins."

"The theme has been prepared to be fitted to the Sparky’s default GTK theme ‘Sparky3-theme’ and the icon set ‘NoirCrystal’. The wallpaper is made by LiquidSky64. The look of the JWM and Openbox desktops have been slightly improved and I installed Sparky default theme and icon set. The old installer doesn't work on machines with EFI," writes the developer.

The developers have updated the Linux kernel to a newer version, 3.16.0-4, the GRUB loader is now at version 2.02 Beta 2, and all the desktops now come with upgraded packages.

The good news is that you already have one of these SparkyLinux installations you can upgrade very easily from the terminal:

[CODE=1]apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade apt-get install -f reboot[CODE=1]

A complete list of changes and new features can be found in the official announcement of the SparkyLinux distro. You can download SparkyLinux 3.5 JWM, SparkyLinux 3.6 e19, and SparkyLinux 3.6 Openbox right now from Softpedia.
