SparkyLinux 3.6, a lightweight, fast, and simple Linux distribution designed for both old and new computers featuring customized LXDE, MATE, Razor-Qt, and Xfce desktops has been released and is now available for download.

SparkyLinux 3.6 has arrived, at least for some of the flavors. The codename for this series of releases has been kept and it's still "Annagerman," although some very big improvements and updates have been made.

The developer doesn't seem to follow a specific release schedule or order, so this time we got the different mix of flavors, although it's easy to see that all of them are really lightweight.

From the looks of it, this will be the last release for this distribution, this year, so the other flavors will have to wait a little bit more to see some updates. In any case, the editions made available are the most important ones and with the most visibility in the community.

SparkyLinux 3.6 "Annagerman" is actually a very big update

This is an operating system based on Debian "testing" so it's not all that unusual that most of the upgrades made are usually quite consistent. Many of the core components have been upgraded, not to mention that the same happened for many of the default apps.

"I am happy to announce the fourth and the last this year iso images of SparkyLinux 3.6 'Annagerman' LXDE, MATE, Razor-Qt and Xfce. At the beginning, I’d like to thank to all of our small but strong community members for their help with searching and solving bugs and problems," said the developer in the official announcement.

As usual, one of the most important packages that have been updated is the Linux kernel, which is now at version 3.16.0-4 (3.16.7-2). There are a couple of newer ones, but changing the branch can be problematic.

Also, the Xfce desktop environment has been upgraded to version 4.10.1, MATE is now at version 1.8.1, the latest GRUB has been added by default, the Twitter client Hotot has been replaced by Turpial, the system has been synchronized with Debian “testing” repository as of 03/12/2014, a couple of new apps have been added, a few older packages have been deprecated, and some smaller fixes have been implemented

A complete list of changes and new features can be found in the official announcement of the SparkyLinux distro. You can download the SparkyLinux 3.6 LXDE, MATE, Razor-Qt, and Xfce editions right now from Softpedia.
